East Meets West: Summer Florals Trend

Florals are a steadfast favorite for us — micro or macro, muted or metallic, there is no wrong way to wear this eternally-in-style print. To help us illustrate the innumerable possibilities, we’re putting two fashionable ladies in a head-to-head style match-up. Separated by more than 3,000 miles and a world of difference in their personal aesthetics, we sent two bloggers shopping and asked them to put together their favorite flower-festooned look from their local Simon Premium Outlets.

From the East Coast, we tapped Opal Stewart, the face behind Opal by Opal, who spent a day perusing the offerings at New York’s Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. Then for an alternate point of view straight from the West Coast, Allergic to Vanilla’s Carlina Harris shares the look she found on a recent outing to San Francisco Premium Outlets. Take a look at these two different takes on the trend, then head to your nearest Simon to embrace florals for yourself — we’re sure the result will be anything but garden variety.

BOTTEGA VENETA Antique Pink Butterfly Cotton Dress, Convertible Embroidered Bag, and Patent Leather Woven Round-Toe Pumps.

What are your thoughts on the floral trend?
I’ve been seeing a lot of versatility in florals this season, and I absolutely love it! Bold retro prints and subtle, toned-down designs, an array of fabrics from cotton to silk, and a variety of colors ranging from vibrant hues to pastels and even metallics — anything goes! There is a floral print that’s suitable for every occasion.

Can you tell us about the outfit you found? How does it represent your personal style?
My full look is from Bottega Veneta. The midi dress is made from an antique-pink cotton and linen blend fabric and features a relaxed silhouette that is cinched at the waist with a brown leather belt before falling into a pleated, flowy skirt. I paired it with a complementary blue messenger bag that had the faintest touch of embroidered floral details. I finished the look with a rounded-toe printed pump. The A-line silhouette of the dress, the midi length, and the print are all perfect representations of my feminine and chic personal style.

What drew you to the florals you picked for this outfit?
I loved that the print was a bit unconventional, modern, and subtle. Instead of featuring flowers, there is a focus on the butterfly that pollinates them. The dress itself exudes femininity, and the fluttering tonal pink butterflies are a perfect balance of playful and chic.

What other stores in Woodbury Common Premium Outlets were your faves?
I really loved Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, because it had a great selection of designer options all in one place. I love the variety of brands you can find at Barneys New York Warehouse — literally every single piece there is gorgeous — and for an updated twist on wardrobe staples, my go-to is Theory. And of course Bottega Veneta, because of its unconventional take on the floral trend, and I’ve always loved their designs.

How has the floral trend evolved in the several seasons we’ve been seeing it recur?
It feels very fresh and super different from the dark florals of fall and the sweeter dainty florals I remember from last spring. There is a lot more color and print mixing happening. It’s okay to pair two contrasting floral print styles — it feels very editorial and European in my opinion.

Can you tell us about the outfit you found? How does it represent your personal style?
There were so many florals in store! Narrowing down my look was tough. I wanted my outfit to reflect my Allergic to Vanilla aesthetic, as I love to have fun with fashion. While most people want to push themselves in the fashion department, it’s not that easy to pull off dramatic trends or colors when you generally play it safe. So, my look was a nod to all the girls trying to get out of their comfort zone while not going overboard on the fashion scale — relatable, chic, and still on-trend. I loved clashing the floral prints on the top and the bag. It felt very editorial but everyday with the addition of denim and summer slides.

What drew you to the florals you picked for this outfit?
The floral top felt elegant and feminine, and I was drawn to the silhouette of the poofy shoulders and sweet piping around the collar. I imagined wearing and re-wearing this top with overalls, cropped denim, and everything else in my wardrobe — I see lots of ways to wear this top! The bag is stunning, and the vibrant emerald shade sold me on it. I’m very much a color and print kind of girl, so it was an easy sell here too.

What designers do you think nailed the florals trend for this season?
Dolce & Gabanna always gets their florals right, and Gucci.

What other stores at San Francisco Premium Outlets were your faves?
Furla, the team was so sweet! We made friends and followed each other on Instagram. Lucky Brand, Kate Spade, Theory, and Nike were also all standouts.
